Nashville is one of the greatest bar crawl cities in America — and not just because of Broadway. Yes, the neon-soaked strip of honky tonks between 2nd and 5th Avenue is genuinely world-class. But the visitors who only do Broadway miss three-quarters of what makes Nashville's nightlife scene so extraordinary.
This guide covers everything. Lower Broadway for the spectacle and the history. East Nashville for the soul and the locals. The Gulch for the craft cocktails and the bluegrass institution that launched more careers than any venue its size has a right to. Whether you're planning a bachelorette party, a bachelor party, a college gameday weekend, or just a great Friday night with friends — Nashville delivers every time.
Here's how to do it properly.
The Three Nashville Bar Crawl Zones
Zone 1
The Honky Tonk Strip
Lower Broadway between 2nd and 5th Avenue is the most concentrated strip of live music in the world. On a Saturday night, there are more professional-caliber musicians playing simultaneously within these four blocks than you'd find headlining most festivals. Every bar is free to enter. Every bar plays live music from noon until 3am, seven days a week.
416 Broadway
Crown jewel of Lower Broadway
Opened in 1999 as a Western wear store with a stage in the back, it has barely changed since. The house band plays traditional honky tonk. The $6 Recession Special (PBR + shot of Jack + Moon Pie) is one of the great value propositions in American nightlife. Cash only at the bar.
422 Broadway
Most historically significant bar on the strip
Patsy Cline, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson all played here before they were famous. The back door opens directly onto the alley behind the Ryman Auditorium. Three floors of simultaneous live music.
428 Broadway
Often overlooked, consistently excellent
Sandwiched between Robert's and Tootsie's, Legend's is smaller, stronger musicians, and a slightly more authentic feel than its famous neighbors. The back bar is quieter and a good spot to actually have a conversation.
418 Broadway
Eclectic booking — rockabilly, outlaw country, Americana
More eclectic than the traditional honky tonks. Smaller and more intimate than Tootsie's, friendlier to walk-ins on busy nights.
412 Broadway
Best upper deck view of the strip
Best rooftop on Broadway for a bird's-eye view of the strip. The rooftop fills fast on warm nights — arrive before 9pm. Music quality varies more than at Robert's but the atmosphere on a packed Saturday is hard to beat.
Do Broadway first — start at 7:30pm, hit Robert's, Tootsie's, and Legend's in that order — then escape to East Nashville or The Gulch for the rest of the night.

Insider Knowledge
Cover Charges on Broadway
None. Every bar on Lower Broadway is free. The musicians are paid by tips — the local standard is $2–$5 per set, more if you're staying a while. This is how they make their living.
Best Nights
Friday and Saturday are the peak nights everywhere. Tuesday at Station Inn and Monday at The 5 Spot (Motown Monday) are the insider picks. Sunday at Robert's Western World is slower than weekends but the music is equally good and you can actually hear it.
Getting Around
Broadway is walkable but East Nashville requires a rideshare. Uber and Lyft both work well but surge heavily after midnight on weekends — book your return ride before last call, not after. The flat ride from Broadway to Five Points typically runs $8–$12 at non-surge times.
What to Wear
Nashville is genuinely casual. Jeans and boots are standard on Broadway. East Nashville skews slightly more creative. The Analog at the Hutton Hotel appreciates smart casual but has no formal dress code.
Parking
Don't. Take a rideshare to Broadway and use it to move between zones. Parking downtown on weekends is expensive, stressful, and means you can't drink.
