What makes Illinois Fighting Illini game day unique — the rituals, chants, and moments every fan lives for.
Since 1975, KAM's on Green Street has been the undisputed home of Illinois gameday. The bar fills to capacity hours before kickoff, with orange-and-blue fans packed shoulder-to-shoulder across multiple floors. KAM's has hosted generations of Illini students and alumni, and its walls are covered in decades of Fighting Illini memorabilia. No Champaign gameday is complete without a stop here.
The Marching Illini's signature pre-game entrance — called "Three in One" — is one of the most visually impressive band formations in college football. The band splits into three separate columns that converge into one unified formation on the field, all while playing the Illinois fight song. Fans gather outside Memorial Stadium specifically to watch this tradition before every home game.
The Illinois student section — known I — is famous for its elaborate card stunts that create massive images visible from across the stadium. Students receive colored cards at the gate and follow instructions to create portraits, logos, and messages that span the entire student section. It's one of the oldest and most impressive student section traditions in the Big Ten.
Named after Illinois legend Red Grange — "The Galloping Ghost" — Grange Grove is the premier tailgate destination at Memorial Stadium. The grove fills with tents, grills, and orange-and-blue fans hours before kickoff. Alumni groups, fraternities, and families all stake out their spots in this legendary tailgate area, which has been the social hub of Illinois gameday for decades.
The annual Illinois–Purdue rivalry game is played for the Cannon Trophy, a replica Civil War cannon that has been contested since 1943. The winning team fires the cannon on the field after the game, and the trophy is displayed prominently in the winner's athletic facility until the following year. It's one of the most unique rivalry trophies in the Big Ten.
Top spots to eat before or after the game — ranked by proximity, quality, and game day vibes.
Chicago-Style Hot Dogs & Beef · 1.2 miles from stadium
The legendary Chicago chain that Illini fans swear by on gameday. The Italian beef sandwich — slow-roasted, thinly sliced, and dipped in au jus — is the ultimate pre-game fuel. Lines move fast and the food is worth every minute of the wait.
Bar Food · 0.6 miles from stadium
The legendary Illini bar since 1975 also serves up serious gameday food. The loaded cheese fries and orange-and-blue wings are the go-to orders. Cheap, filling, and served fast — exactly what you need before a 3-hour game.
Craft Brewery & Kitchen · 0.7 miles from stadium
Champaign's beloved local brewery serves elevated pub food alongside house-brewed beers. The brewery burger — topped with beer-braised onions and house-made pickles — pairs perfectly with the Illini Amber. The rooftop patio is the best pre-game spot in Campustown.
Mexican Restaurant · 0.9 miles from stadium
The best Mexican food in Champaign and a gameday favorite for Illini fans who want something more substantial than bar food. The carne asada tacos are loaded with fresh toppings, and the house-made guacamole is made tableside. A great sit-down option before the chaos of the bar crawl.
Sports Bar & Grill · 0.5 miles from stadium
The alumni favorite on Green Street is famous for its 12-flavor wing menu. From classic buffalo to honey garlic to orange-and-blue Illini sauce, the wings here are legendary. Order a double basket and a pitcher of beer — you won't regret it.
Classic Diner · 1.0 mile from stadium
Open 24 hours and a Champaign institution since 1960. The breakfast skillet — loaded with eggs, potatoes, sausage, and smothered in house-made gravy — is the ultimate gameday morning fuel. Cash only, counter seating, and zero pretension. A true Illini tradition.
