Fan Culture

Athens Game Day Traditions

What makes Georgia Bulldogs game day unique — the rituals, chants, and moments every fan lives for.

Ringing the Chapel Bell

After every home win

After every Georgia victory, fans and players ring the historic Chapel Bell on North Campus. The tradition dates back generations and the sound echoes across Athens victory signal for the entire city.

The Chapel Bell has rung after Bulldog victories since the 1800s — one of college football's oldest traditions.

Uga the Bulldog Mascot

Every home game on the sideline

Uga, the English Bulldog mascot, is one of the most iconic in all of sports. The current Uga XI lives in an air-conditioned doghouse on the sideline and is beloved by fans worldwide. Previous Ugas are buried in a mausoleum inside Sanford Stadium.

Uga is the only mascot in college football with a mausoleum inside the stadium.

Hedges of Sanford Stadium

Visible every game; players run through after big wins

The famous privet hedges surrounding the field at Sanford Stadium are sacred to Georgia fans. Players are only allowed to run through the hedges after major victories, and opposing teams are rarely granted the honor.

The hedges have lined Sanford Stadium since 1929 and are trimmed to perfection for every home game.

Calling the Dawgs

Throughout every game

The iconic "How 'bout them Dawgs!" chant reverberates through Sanford Stadium and downtown Athens on gameday. Fans respond with thunderous "Woof! Woof! Woof!" — a call-and-response tradition that unites 93,000 fans.

The "How 'bout them Dawgs!" cheer has been a Georgia staple since the Vince Dooley era.

The Dawg Walk

2 hours before kickoff

Two hours before kickoff, the Georgia football team walks from the Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall to Sanford Stadium through a corridor of cheering fans. Players high-five supporters and the energy builds to a fever pitch.

Thousands of fans line the Dawg Walk route to send the team off with deafening support.

"Glory Glory" Fight Song

After every Georgia score

Georgia's fight song "Glory Glory" (sung to the tune of "Battle Hymn of the Republic") is belted out by 93,000 fans after every score. The Redcoat Marching Band leads the stadium in a spine-tingling rendition that shakes the hedges.

The Redcoat Band has performed "Glory Glory" since 1949 — over 75 years of Bulldog tradition.
